Global Ranking of Academic Subjects 2017

The ShanghaiRanking's Global Ranking of Academic Subjects 2017, released on 28th June 2017 by ShanghaiRanking Consultancy, is a league table of academic subjects, ranking universities from all over the world. They are released before the Shanghai Rankings, due to be published in August. These rankings include 4000 institutions worldwide, covering 52 subjects in 5 main fields: natural sciences, engineering, life sciences, medical sciences and social sciences.

Ranking is based on 5 indicators: the number of publications authored by an institution, the total number of staff in an institution winning a significant award in an academic subject, the number of papers published in top journals in an academic subject, the percentage of internationally collaborated papers authored by an institution in an academic subject and the impact of publications authored by an institution.

152 French institutions, when all subjects are taken into consideration, are in the top 100. France confirms its strong position in mathematics with 18 French institutions figuring in the top 100. US universities take first place 32 times across the 52 subjects, while 8 of the top spots are claimed by institutions from China. Havard University takes the top position in 15 subjects.
