FogGuru: fog computing experienced in the smart city of València

Since September 2017, the FogGuru European project has been running under the coordination of Professor Guillaume Pierre of Université de Rennes 1 in the IRISA laboratory. The aim is to bring Europe at the best level in the field of "fog computing" and thus prepare a generation of professionals for these new technologies and their applications.

FogGuru is a new paradigm for hosting innovative applications and services, allowing the use of computing and storage resources located in the immediate proximity of end users. A natural extension of cloud computing, fog computing offers many advantages such as a better interactivity for applications and improved use of available resources.

The FogGuru project, which lasts 4 years, is a collaboration between two prestigious universities (Université de Rennes 1 and the Technische Universität Berlin  in Germany), two high-tech SMEs (Elastisys in Sweden and U-Hopper in Italy), as well as the EIT Digital Rennes and the Foundation Las Naves in Spain, which is developing a full-scale experimental laboratory in València, Spain.

For more than one year, eight doctoral students have been following academic and industrial training specifically focused on "fog computing" and have the smart city of Valencia as their laboratory for experimentation. Their research project consists in improving some aspects of drinking water consumption and management in the city of València.

This full-scale experimental laboratory will be inaugurated on Friday, November 22nd in the presence of the Innovation Advisor, Carlos Galiana; the Advisor for the Integral Water Cycle, Elisa Valía; the Vice-President for European Programs of the Université de Rennes 1, Sébastien Le Picard; and the Project Coordinator, Guillaume Pierre from the University of Rennes 1 within IRISA.

Coordinating this project is a unique opportunity for the research laboratory IRISA - of which Université de Rennes 1 is one of the active members - to position itself at the heart of the emerging and promising field of research that is fog computing. It is also a recognition of the site's scientific excellence and its ability to carry out research and doctoral training activities at the highest European level.
