The policy of Université de Rennes 1 is to conduct excellent fundamental and disciplinary research of scientific and technological relevance by promoting the emergence of highly innovative and risky projects and providing modern facilities and fostering transdisciplinary research to address major current and future societal issues.
Research performed at Université de Rennes 1 is renowned on both a national and international level in a variety of fields. To name but a few, its Mathematics and Chemistry departments are among the top 150+ and 200+, respectively, in Shanghai’s ranking, while Earth sciences appear in the 200+ in QS ranking.
Nearly all of its 1600 faculties and scientists, along with ca. 1100 PhD students, are gathered in 32 research units/laboratories co-labelled by prestigious national research bodies (CNRS, Inserm, Inria, INRA).
Research is organised around 4 main scientific areas:
- Mathematics & Science, Information and Communication Technologies, with special emphasis on Numerical analysis & Cryptology, Cybersecurity, Big Data, Electronics, Photonics.
- Physical Sciences with special emphasis on Inorganic glasses, Green chemistry, Materials and Sustainable development
- Life and Environmental Sciences with special emphasis on Cancer, Technologies for health, Environment-Nutrition-Health continuum, Complex environmental systems, Dynamics of landscapes
- Humanities and Social Sciences with special emphasis on European law, Law & Environment, Public economy, European integrations, Digital society.
Much of the research at Université de Rennes 1 is conducted in close collaboration with major industrial companies and international groups. Some of these partnerships take place formally within the 5 joint industry-university laboratories and International Research Laboratories under the umbrella of the CNRS and Inserm.
