Cybersecurity is rapidly becoming a key strategic concern worldwide, with the explosion of digital technologies raising major sovereignty issues and privacy challenges. In this context, cybersecurity is facing a major training and recruitment problem: according to Forbes, 2 million positions will be left vacant in 2019 in this area.
Rennes, a major Cybersecurity Hub in Europe
Rennes has many distinctive assets to tackle this challenge. It features world class research teams covering the whole cybersecurity chain from Physics to Law, through Electronics, Maths and Computer Science, either in CNRS joint labs, in Inria or in companies such as Orange Labs. Together they represent over 140 researchers and lecturers, including notably 6 ERC laureates and 3 IUF members.
A dense socio-economic ecosystem in cybersecurity has furthermore steadily developed in Rennes over the past 30 years, with a major acceleration since 2014 when the national Center of Excellence in Cybersecurity (Pôle Excellence Cyber PEC) was created by the Ministry of Defense and the Brittany Region to foster training, research and the development of innovative start-ups. Based in Rennes, the PEC has multiple dimensions: civil-military, private-public, Research-teaching-innovation. It federates Ministry’s entities, the Technology Research Institute B<>com and numerous companies ranging from large groups (Orange, Airbus CyberSecurity, Thales, …) to SMEs and startups, as well as public research labs, universities and schools.

CyberSchool has been designed as a research-oriented graduate school in cybersecurity aiming at training future engineers and scientists through early exposure to contemporary research in all security related issues. It will draw on the expertise of Rennes 1 and Rennes 2 universities, the ENS, 4 prestigious schools of engineering (CentraleSupélec, IMT Atlantique, INSA and ENSAI) and Science-Po Rennes. CyberSchool will also benefit from the strong involvement of CNRS and Inria, which are already very active in training activities in Rennes. Their researchers teaching in CyberSchool will be granted “adjunct professorship” positions. The aim is to double the number of students in cybersecurity in Rennes (from 100 to 200 Master’s graduates and from 30 to 60 new PhDs each year), thus reaching eventually a total of about 580 students.
A transdisciplinary approach covering every aspects of Cybersecurity
CyberSchool will offer an innovative and attractive scientific training at Master’s and PhD levels and in continuing education focusing on both fundamental and advanced areas of cybersecurity. It will be embedded in an interdisciplinary approach to tackle security challenges by combining mathematics (cryptography), digital science and technologies (electronics, computer science, system security, privacy, formal methods) and social sciences (law, use, acceptability). The school will deal with theories, methods and algorithms ensuring a secure digital society, as much as with contents that require protection in a wide variety of settings and conditions of use (mobility, cloud, industrial systems). Case studies will range from IoT security to the security of medical data in patient-files.
Relying on the IDE@L training framework, the CyberSchool Master’s curriculum will offer flexible courses of study combining a Major and a Minor, a research project and an internship in an academic or industrial laboratory. Students will choose a Major among CyberSchool’s 6 research areas (Cryptography, Formal Methods and Security, Software and System Security, AI and Security, Hardware and embedded systems, Privacy and Law). Minor courses will be chosen from another Major, in Innovation and Entrepreneurship courses, in Law or in Political Science. CyberSchool will also provide its students with individual mentoring, international training opportunities within our network of academic partners abroad (internship mobility, PhD co-supervisions, joint degrees) and strong connections with many socio-economic actors.
